MOVING TIPS

Practical moving tips.

You do not move every day. Thank god for that, because it takes a lot of time and preparation. You can see that by the amount of tips we give you.

And we know, because we have a lot of experience! We are a member of the Dutch organisation “Erkende Verhuizers”. Not just anyone can become a member of this organisation. You need to have well trained personnel and good moving trucks. The trucks can not be used for any other purpose then moving and need to be clean.  It speaks for itself that Stoof Removals always comes in time and keeps its promises. 1. As soon as you know you are moving:

2. four to two weeks before you move

• Make an appointment with Stoof Removals
• Provide termination notice for old rental contract
• Arrange mortgage
• Arrange the move with your phone service provider
• Inform school of relocation
• Make arrangements with new owners regarding taking over the carpet, etc.
• Arrange leave with your employer
• Investigate possible reimbursement of moving expenses
• Investigate possible tax reimbursement of moving expenses
• Take measurements of new home
• Give notice to your maid
• Begin sorting items you are not taking with you to your new residence

 3.  The last two weeks before you move

• Send change of address cards
• Arrange childcare for the moving day
• Arrange pet care for the moving day
• Inform landlord
• Redeem (store specific) savings stamps
• Cancel post office box and request new post office box
• Return library books
• Apply to a new family doctor
• Store important papers, which you don’t need immediately, and jewellery in a safety deposit box
• Advertise for sale any items of value that you don’t want to take to your new residence or dispose of
• Start packing 

4. Last few days before you move

• Clean new house and “name” rooms
• Loosen any carpet you are taking with you
• Take down lamps/light fixtures
• Take down curtains (except in bedrooms)
• Inform suppliers
• Take down dish antenna from roof
• Pack everything except items that you will need at the last moment
• Pick up easy meals for the evening before and the day of the move
• Check to make sure there is enough coffee for moving day
• Request garbage removal
• Make washing machine transport ready
• Request moving card from local authorities
• Remove garden plants
• Leave garbage containers empty and clean, accompanied by garbage calendar
• Bring any chemicals to the depot or chemical bus, Leave behind the “milieu box” • environment box at your old residence
 

5. Last day before you move

• Defrost refrigerator and clean out
• If deepfreeze is full, set on the coldest setting
• Disassemble furniture, if possible
• Remove swing from the clock
• Try to reserve a place for the moving truck in front of your residence with your • vehicle and perhaps your neighbour’s vehicle
• Pack your last minute items
• Place garden plants in containers or plastic bags
• Plants in the house will be taken care of by the movers 

6. Moving day

• Take down remaining curtains
• Keep all keys in your hand baggage
• Keep all money and credit cards in your hand baggage
• Walk through house to check for items left behind
• Read meters
• Turn off gas and electricity (except if electricity is needed to continue heating)
• Turn of water in the winter (even if it is not freezing)
• Shut all windows and doors firmly
• Return keys to landlord or new owners 

7. Upon arrival in your new home

• Place as much as possible in the correct place
• Check all unpacked items for possible moving damage
• Arrange payment with your removal company
• Make one room “liveable” as soon as possible
• Hang bedroom curtains
• Refrigerator and freezer – give one day rest before connecting to electricity
• Remove transport safety on washing machine 

8. After the move

• Unpack everything
• Hang up your nameplate on front door
• Schedule pickup of empty moving boxes with Stoof Removals
• Introduce yourself to the new landlord
• Report change of address to the bureau of civilian affairs in your new municipality
• Get the keys from your new postal box

B. Things you need to know about your new home

• Height, breadth and length of all rooms and other spaces
• Breadth of all doors
• Height and breadth of all windows
• The possibility to place sun screens
• Height of the walls under the windows
• Available space for refrigerator and deepfreeze
• Number and place of power points
• Rules of the land lord
• Pick up date of garbage
• Is there a connection to gas?
• When the last time was that chimney was cleaned?
• Is there a special connection for electric cooking?
• Is it allowed to keep pets?
• Is it possible to put the moving truck in front of the door?
• Is there an elevator?
• Can we place a moving elevator? 

C. The packing

• If you want to do the packing yourself please inform with Stoof Removals about how to do this as efficient as possible.
• When you move with Stoof Removals you will get moving boxes on loan, we will pick them up again after the move.
• Start packing after you received the moving boxes, it takes more time then you think.
• Label all the moving boxes and state to what room they go
• You can always call us for more boxes
• You can hang clothing in the special wardrobe boxes.
• Close cupboards and place keys in the drawers and close them with tape
• Divide books over the boxes and fill them up with light weight objects
• Place bottles upright in the boxes, separate the chemical and flammable matters
• You can leave the packing of fragile items to Stoof Removals, if you want to this yourself please ask us for advice. The insurance against breaking only counts when Stoof Removals also does the packing.
• Role the table silver in blotting-paper
• Do not pack sharp items with fragile items
• Do not pack big mirrors and paintings, Stoof Removals will take care of that
• Put small plants together in a box, do not pack the big plants, Stoof Removals will take care of that.
